Formal writing was used to write an academic research paper. Formal writing is usually not told in the first person point of view. This means that words such as “I, me, and my” should not be used during this paper. Also most formal writing essays usually have a readability score of grades 9-12. The readability score is used to determine the level of difficulty the essay is. This readability score shows that this essay is written at a sixth to twelfth grade level. Formal writing must be written using an APA format. This format should come with the title page and the in-text and end-text documentation.

Also unlike formal writing informal writing essays usually have a readability score of grades 6-8. This means that the level of difficulty of this essay is written at a 6th-8th grade level. Informal writing should be written in MLA format meaning that the traditional MLA heading should appear at the top of the paper.
The similarities of these two different types of writing are that they can be used to discuss the same topic or prove the same point. They both should have a reference page at the end, and they can have pictures inserted in them to enhance the reader’s interest in the essay. Overall, these two types of writing are very reliable and will be helpful for writing in the future.
